Setting up a secure SOCKS5 proxy inside Telegram?
A SOCKS5 proxy acts as a secure tunnel for your Telegram app, routing your connection through an external server to bypass firewalls or local internet service provider (ISP) censorship. Unlike an MTProto proxy (which only works inside Telegram), SOCKS5 is highly stable and versatile.
How to Find a Secure SOCKS5 Proxy
Public proxy lists found on random websites are often slow, unstable, and highly insecure. Because public proxies can easily steal your unencrypted metadata, you should find a proxy using one of these safer options
- Free Tiers from Reputable Providers: Trusted proxy companies like Bright Data, Oxylabs, or Webshare offer free starter tiers or limited trial bandwidth with secure, private username/password authentication.
- A Dedicated VPN Service: If you already pay for a VPN (like NordVPN or TorGuard), check your provider's dashboard. Most VPN services include free, secure SOCKS5 proxy server credentials explicitly built for torrenting and messaging apps.
- The Tor Network: If you are looking for an open-source, community-driven solution, you can run a local Tor client on your device. Tor automatically creates a highly secure, local SOCKS5 proxy endpoint directly on your machine (127.0.0.1:9050).
Before proceeding, make sure you have the following four pieces of data from your provider: Server IP (or Hostname), Port, Username, and Password.
Step-by-Step Telegram Setup
The configuration process varies slightly depending on whether you are using a mobile device or a computer.
Mobile Setup (iOS & Android)
- Open Telegram, go to Settings, and select Data and Storage.
- Scroll down to the very bottom of the page and tap Proxy Settings (or Proxy).
- Toggle Use Proxy to ON, then tap Add Proxy. Make sure you select SOCKS5 instead of MTProto.
- Carefully enter your server address, port number, username, and password. Tap the checkmark or Done in the top right corner to save.
Desktop Setup (Windows & macOS)
- Click the three-line menu icon in the top-left corner, go to Settings, and choose Advanced.
- Locate the Data and storage section and click directly on Connection Type (by default it will say Default (TCP or HTTP)).
- Select Use custom proxy, then click Add Proxy and ensure the type bullet is set to SOCKS5.
- Fill out your Server Hostname, Port, Username, and Password fields. Click Save.
How to Verify Your Setup Is Working
Once saved, look next to your proxy listing inside Telegram. You should see a status message saying "Connected" along with a ping response time in milliseconds (e.g., Ping: 45ms).
Additionally, a small shield icon will appear at the top of your chat list. If the shield has a checkmark, your Telegram traffic is successfully hidden and routed away from your local network filters.
